New Vision For Haddonfield: What To Know About The Master Plan Update

HADDONFIELD, NJ — Haddonfield is working on developing its first master plan in nearly 40 years. And the process will give residents the chance to voice which changes they want to see in the borough.

A “master plan” in local government refers to a municipality’s official document establishing the vision for a community’s future. The blueprint often outlines a community’s key objectives, while identifying areas suited for housing, businesses, open space and other aspects of land use that guide a locale’s development.

Haddonfield is in the process of developing a master plan for 2024, launching the project earlier this month. The borough created a survey for residents’ input and will hold its first community meeting on the matter at 7 p.m. June 7 in the Borough Hall Auditorium (242 E Kings Hwy.).

Officials expect the process to take 12-18 months.

While a master plan can pave the way for major changes, that doesn’t mean a complete overhaul for Haddonfield. The borough, which instituted its current master plan in 1984, wants to update four components: housing diversity, resiliency, downtown economic viability, and circulation. “Haddonfield is a great place to live, work, and shop, and we want to keep it that way,” borough officials said. “We also want to respond to changes that are affecting our community proactively. The Master Plan will guide how the Borough can continue to be an excellent community for current residents and future generations.”

The borough has periodically re-examined its plan, most recently in 2009. But officials contend that the world has changed since Haddonfield instituted that plan in the 1980s, so it’s time for something new.

One change includes considerations for the climate crisis. In 2021, the state began requiring future master plans to include climate change-related hazard vulnerability assessments.
