“Chevalier”

Kelvin Harrison Jr., Samara Weaving, Lucy Boynton; directed by Stephen Williams

Directed by Stephen Williams — a filmmaker best known for helming “Westworld” and “The Walking Dead” — the biopic “Chevalier” lights up the big screen with Kelvin Harrison Jr.’s magnificent performance of the eponymous French knight Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges.

Born to French slave owner George Bologne and his Senegalese slave Anne, the musical prodigy became one of the most celebrated artists of 18th Century France. He was a violinist virtuoso, a champion fencer, and a famous composer and conductor.

Audiences will first meet the Black composer as he challenges Mozart to a violin-off in Paris. Did the toe-to-toe riff actually happen? It’s debatable. However, such a thrilling moment serves as a pivotal point to shed light upon the highs and lows of Bologne’s life. What ultimately emerges is an amalgamation of romance, drama and intrigue.

See it.

Harrison’s outstanding performance elevates a very entertaining movie — though at times, the screenplay feels uneven in the execution of its peaks and valleys.

“Evil Dead Rise”

Alyssa Sutherland, Lily Sullivan, Anna-Maree Thomas; directed by Lee Cronin

The “Evil Dead” movie franchise awakens, promising yet another nightmarish gore fest for the fifth time since the 1981 original, “The Evil Dead.”

This time around, the story is set in a condemned high-rise apartment building in Los Angeles, where tattoo artist Ellie (Alyssa Sutherland) and her three children live. Moments later, a sudden earthquake happens, leaving a huge slit in the parking lot’s floor, where Danny (Morgan Davies), one of Ellie’s kids, discovers a peculiar book (the Book of the Dead). Subsequently, the teen opens the book, unleashing the rise of flesh-possessing demons.

Surely, Ellie’s sister, Beth (Lily Sullivan), now wishes she had not dropped in unannounced. Her bad timing is about to turn hellish in this 97-minute twisted tale of two estranged sisters.

See it.

The latest chapter has enough jump scares and gruesome scenes to make fans scream in horror or laugh in folly. Either way, fans of the horror staple will find it entertaining.
