AEW’s Tony Khan says he ‘had to at least think about’ turning MJF babyface

Tony Khan says AEW is at its strongest with MJF as a heel

Leading up to November's Full Gear, MJF was frequently cheered at AEW events, prompting some to suggest he turn babyface. During a recent interview with the LA Times, the AEW president says that while he considered the idea, ultimately, he feels AEW is at its best when "MJF is at his worst."

Khan said:

“I listen to the fans,” Khan says. “When the reactions were so massive, I had to at least think about [making MJF a good guy], but MJF is the world’s best young pro wrestler and one of the best pro wrestling heels of any age I’ve ever seen and I think his ability to antagonize the other wrestlers and the crowd is unparalleled. AEW is at its strongest when MJF is at his worst as a villain.”

Chris Jericho has previously expressed that he feels MJF should turn babyface, saying, "I think he’ll be one of the top babyfaces, whether he wants to be or not, very very soon," at the All Out 2022 press conference. However, Jericho also said MJF expressed to him he wants to remain a heel.

MJF is currently involved in a storyline with Sammy Guevara, Darby Allin, and Jungle Boy Jack Perry. All three asked MJF for a title shot during the champion's re-Bar Mitzvah on the March 15 edition of Dynamite.
