Smell Smoke In Coachella Valley? Mulch Fire Smolders, Burns Days Later

CATHEDRAL CITY, CA — A mulch fire that began Sunday near Cathedral City was still smoldering and burning three days later, Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department told Patch.

Firefighters and heavy equipment operators were expected to remain at the scene through the day as they continue to tear apart enormous mulch piles to squash the smoldering embers within.

Early Monday, the mulch fire ignited near the 27500 block Rio Del Sol Road, in an unincorporated area between Cathedral City and Thousand Palms. There, piles of mulch and landscape debris, have produced a well-banked fire difficult to quickly douse.

“The problem is that they are 20-foot-tall mulch piles about 5 acres worth—the fire is deep inside,” Cal Fire spokesperson Tawny Castro. “The firefighters need to spread out each pile with heavy equipment. It’s time consuming.”

Smoke may be visible throughout the valley through the week, Cal Fire warned. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
