Impaired Driving Investigated As Factor In River Crash: LBPD

LONG BEACH, CA — Long Beach Police said speed, reckless driving and impaired driving could have been factors in the deaths of two men due to their SUV crashing, catching fire and plunging into the Los Cerritos Channel.

At about 6:22 p.m. Sunday night, the Long Beach Police Department responded to a car crash in the area of Studebaker Road and Loynes Drive. Emergency responders were told that a car had crashed into a bridge support, caught fire and went into the river.

Preliminary investigation of the crash revealed that a 2004 GMC Yukno was speeding northbound on Studebaker Road.

“The vehicle was weaving in and out of traffic and it appeared the driver lost control,” LBPD said in a statement.

Fire Department divers were able to rescue the driver from the submerged vehicle and located a passenger in the water. The driver was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The passenger was declared dead at the scene, authorities said.

Both of the men’s identities were withheld pending notification of their next of kin by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner/Coroner.

“At this time, speed, reckless driving, and impaired driving are being investigated as possible factors in the collision,” LBPD said.
