In the closing segment of Friday's WWE SmackDown, Uso stood in the ring with Reigns's Undisputed WWE Universal title belt, issuing a challenge to Reigns to face him. While not yet announced, the match is planned for the SummerSlam pay-per-view on Saturday, August 5.

Following the events of last week's Money in the Bank pay-per-view where Uso pinned Reigns in a tag match to become the first person to pin Reigns since 2019, a show-long storyline involving Reigns, Uso, and the rest of the Bloodline played out on Friday's SmackDown.

Jimmy and Jey Uso held a "Tribal Court trial of the Tribal Chief" to kick off the show. Reigns teased abdicating his position as the leader of The Bloodline, but instead hit Jey with a low blow. Reings and Solo Sikoa then laid out Jimmy and Jey. Jimmy was stretchered out in an injury angle following the attack.

Later in the show, Paul Heyman told Reigns backstage that Jey was returning to the arena after going to the hospital with Jimmy, and was looking for Reigns. That set up the show-closing angle where Jey attacked Reigns and Solo Sikoa in the ring.

As Jey attacked Sikoa with a chair, Reigns fled the ring, but left his Universal title belt behind. Jey picked up the title and declared himself the judge, jury, and executioner, and issued the challenge to Reigns to set up the future title bout.
