Fermi Class Of 1974 Plans Events For 50-Year Reunion

ENFIELD, CT — In June 1974, Richard Nixon was still U.S. President, Hank Aaron had just surpassed Babe Ruth’s all-time home run record, the average cost of a gallon of gas was 53 cents and 8-track players boomed with the sounds of artists like the Eagles, Grand Funk Railroad, the Doobie Brothers, Bachman-Turner Overdrive, Stevie Wonder and Elton John (yes, he’s been around that long).

That same month, several hundred teenagers graduated as the Class of 1974 at Enrico Fermi High School. This group was unique in that it was the first Fermi class to have attended the school, which opened in 1971, for all three years (at the time, ninth grade was still in Kosciuszko and Kennedy junior high schools).

This weekend, the class celebrates its 50-year reunion with a series of events. A golf outing is scheduled for Friday at 9 a.m. at Cedar Knob Golf Course in Somers, followed by happy hour at Sonny’s Place in Somers at 6 p.m.; the formal reunion is slated for Saturday at 6 p.m. at Twin Hills Country Club in Longmeadow, Mass.; and a relaxing Sunday afternoon begins at noon at Worthington Vineyard & Winery, also in Somers.

“It had been my privilege and honor over the past 50 years to bring the amazing Class of 1974 together,” organizer Janet (Cannone) Hagist told Patch. “It will be the 10th gathering of our class, as we celebrate our momentous 50-year class reunion.”

Hagist said classmates are traveling from 21 states to reconnect with old friends and acquaintances, catch up with each other and reminiscence oabout their high school days together.

“I have always said the success of our reunions are due to the people who attend,” she said. “They make it a memorable event, and I am very grateful for their continued bond and interest.”
