Palm Desert Deputies Plan DUI Checkpoint

PALM DESERT, CA — A DUI checkpoint is planned Friday night by the Palm Desert Sheriff’s Station, and motorists caught driving impaired and subsequently convicted will face about $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license, authorities said.

The checkpoint is scheduled from 6 p.m. Feb. 23 to 2 a.m. Feb. 24 at an undisclosed location, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department. The Palm Desert Sheriff’s Station services the cities of Indian Wells, Palm Desert and Rancho Mirage as well as nearby unincorporated areas.

DUI checkpoint locations are determined based on data showing incidents of impaired-driving-related crashes, the law enforcement agency said.

During the operation, deputies will be looking for drivers under the influence of alcohol, narcotics and prescription/over-the-counter medications.

“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” Sgt. Don Olson said. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improves traffic safety.”
