3 LI Beaches Reopen Swimming After High Surf, Tide Conditions

LONG ISLAND, NY — Several beaches on the South Shore of Long Island have lifted their swimming ban on Friday, after two days of abnormal high surf due to Hurricane Franklin.

Jones Beach, Robert Moses, and Hither Hills, confirmed with Patch that swimming is allowed on Friday.

However, a representative for Jones Beach said that Field 2 continues to be flooded.

George Gorman, Long Island Regional Director, New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation, said it could a week for the water to naturally retreat into the ocean.

The National Weather Service issued another rip current statement for southern Suffolk County, as life-threatening rip currents are expected. The statement is in effect until 8 p.m.

Long Beach permitted “waist deep” swimming on Thursday. However, swimming is currently banned as of Friday morning.

Lifeguards will make an assessment at noon, a representative told Patch.

Franklin is losing tropical characteristics and is expected to become an an extratropical cyclone by Friday night, the National Hurricane Center said.

The Category 2 storm lashed Bermuda on Wednesday as the Category 2 storm was forecast to pass near the island located in the North Atlantic Ocean, the Associated Press said.

Multiple beaches suspended swimming on Wednesday and Thursday, due to abnormal high tides.

Governor Kathy Hochul enforced the ban, to take preventative measures in unpredictable conditions.

“As peak hurricane season approaches, the safety of all New Yorkers remains my top priority,” Hochul said. “With tropical storms and hurricanes affecting our beaches on Long Island, we are taking proactive steps to protect New Yorkers, and I urge everyone to remain vigilant.”
