Newington Runner Wins State Open; Other North-Central Athletes Shine

MANCHESTER, CT — Half a century after the initial CIAC girls state cross country championships were run, Monday turned out to be a great day at Wickham Park for competitors from schools in Hartford and Tolland counties.

Katie Bohlke of Newington easily won the girls’ individual race, covering the 3.1-mile “Green Monster” course in 18:16 to finish 20 seconds ahead of runner-up Brooke Strauss of Glastonbury. Twin sisters Tess and Liv Sherry of Conard were third and fourth, with Harper Shirley of Manchester winding up fifth to give area runners a clean sweep of the top five spots.

In team competition, Greenwich took first place with 95 points, easily outdistancing runner-up Cheshire’s 166. It was the second State Open crown for the Cardinals, and first since 1979.
