County To Purchase Cedar Creek Campground, Preserve It

BERKELEY, NJ — Ocean County voted to purchase Cedar Creek Campground in Bayville, permanently preserving 27 acres of land.

The purchase of the land at $5.9 million, under the Ocean County Natural Land Trust Program, means that the campground off Route 9 will close at the end of the season.

“This is proof that we’re trying to keep the sprawl of growth of new homes down as low as possible,” said Council President John Bacchione.

The addition of this site to the already-protected land in Berkeley means that the land behind Yesterday’s down to the Dudley Park area that is adjacent to the Rail Trail will be “preserved in perpetuity,” Bacchione said.

The campground had a lot of interest from developers, said Mayor Carmen Amato. There could have been at least 100 homes built on the land, he said, which could have been apartments allowing even more families to move in.

“This is a big victory for Berkeley Township in our efforts to buy as much open space to stop overdevelopment within our community,” Amato said.

“This was a big win,” Amato said. “And we hope to have more of these.”
