Metuchen Approves Funding For Improvements To Center Street Park

METUCHEN, NJ — The Borough on Monday approved funding for making improvements to the Hardold C. Junker Kiwanis Park, also know as Center Street Park.

Part of the funding for this project comes from Middlesex Water, Mayor Jonathan M Busch said.

One of the features of the park was the large metal slide, which had to be removed a few years ago due to safety reasons. Gradually, other park equipment fell into disrepair.

With the new funding, Borough officials will be making several improvements and renovations to the park. They include a new swing set and a safer climbing structure. Both will be built over a new rubber playground surface, Busch said. Officials will also install a new, safer slide.

Metuchen also plans to undertake re-landscaping the perimeter while maintaining the existing trees around the park.

“These improvements represent yet another investment by the Borough in our recreational spaces and an important replacement of aging infrastructure,” Busch said.

“We are excited that future generations of residents will be able to enjoy Junker/Center Street Park in the same way that so many others have over the years.”

Work on the project is expected to begin sometime in the fall, Borough Administrator Melissa Perilstein said.
