WFI Row: Sports Ministry Not Pleased That Top Wrestlers Are Skipping International Meets

The Sports Ministry is not happy with the top wrestlers not taking part in international events amid their stand-off with WFI and its chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, as per PTI.

The likes of Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia, Ravi Dahiya, Deepak Punia, Anshu Malik and Sangita Mor have opted out of UWW Ranking Series events. All this while a probe panel is looking into sexual abuse allegations against the WFI chief.

The government is not impressed by this.

“We don’t get why they are not competing when their demands have been met. We need to give time to the committee to complete its probe. It is the wrestlers’ decision and we can’t force anyone but they should not have missed the events,” said a ministry official.

“The committee was announced by the minister on January 21 night and was formed on January 23. The committee members requested us to give them some more time as they could start their probe only after the joining of the new member,” he added.

A six-member Oversight Committee led by MC Mary Kom is currently looking into the day-t0-day workings of the WFI.

The committee is also investigating claims that Brij Bhushan has sexually harassed many female wrestlers plus intimidated athletes.

The ministry was forced to set up the panel in the wake of the wrestlers staging a sit-in protest at Jantar Mantar, demanding Brij Bhushan’s resignation and dissolution of the WFI.
