Monaco’s Alexander Nübel won’t return to Bayern Munich at the end of the season

Bayern Munich sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic has said that Alexander Nübel (26), currently on loan at AS Monaco, won’t return from his loan at the end of the 2022/23 season.

In an exclusive interview with Get French Football News’ Luke Entwistle, Nübel said that it “made no sense” for him to return to Bayern Munich whilst Manuel Neuer was number 1 at the club. In an interview with Sky Sports, transcribed by Fabrizio Romano, Salihamidzic said, “Neuer will definitely play another two or three years and Sven Ulreich will also be there. Nübel will not come back in 2023. We spoke to Alex about our plans. At some point, we have to make decisions.”

Nübel’s two-year loan at AS Monaco, where he has established himself as first-choice goalkeeper, will end this summer. He has told GFFN previously that staying in the Principality was “possible.” Nübel’s contract with Bayern Munich runs until 2026.

After a difficult start to life in the Principality, Nübel has made the number 1 jersey at Monaco his own. This season, his shot-stopping efforts in Ligue 1 rank him amongst the best in the top five European divisions. The German goalkeeper has, however, failed to impose himself at Bayern Munich, making only four appearances for the Bavarian club as an understudy to Neuer.
